Mayor

Mayor — banner

The Mayor of Briarmont Township is the elected head of the town's civil government, seated at Town Hall. A township chartered in 1830 has seen many hands on the gavel — timber money, reform slates, caretaker mayors, and the occasional landslide nobody saw coming — and the office has outlasted them all.

The office

  • Selection: elected by townwide vote of Briarmont's residents.
  • Seat: Town Hall, where the mayor's office and the town's public records share a roof.
  • Duties: presiding over town business and the municipal budget, signing ordinances, appointing township staff, and standing for Briarmont at ribbon-cuttings, festivals, and funerals alike.
  • Working with the county: the township runs its own affairs, but public safety runs through county and civic institutions — the Hartwell County Sheriff's Department, the Briarmont Fire Department, and Hartwell General Hospital. A mayor who cannot work with the Sheriff and the Fire Chief does not stay mayor long.

The office in roleplay

The seat — and who holds it — is played out in town RP: campaigns, council fights, and the long small-town memory of every promise made. Characters bound for Town Hall often train through Oakridge College's Municipal Administration Certificate or Political Science and Civic Studies program.
