Sara Mae Briggs was the younger second wife of Edgar Briggs and the mother of the youngest of his children, Holt. By the time she entered the household, Edgar was long settled in Briarmont — a saw hand turned foreman of the Hartwell Timber Co. sawmill — and his first wife, who had borne his seven elder children, had died. Considerably younger than her husband, Sara Mae took up the running of a home already known across the founding rolls for its noise, its order, and its stubborn resilience.
Her own son, Holt, was born in 1899 and raised under her care while Edgar kept the mill running. She outlived her husband by nearly three decades, carrying the family's name and its reputation for steadiness into the Oakridge era and living to see Holt come of age as one of the founders of Alpha Chi Epsilon. Some records spell her name Sarah Mae.
