Briarmont County is ‘burning allowed’ county. Fires in Hartwell County pre-date the residential burn permits and are grandfathered. Bonfires, exterior fires with a firepit are allowable on Greek Row. Only charcoal, clean wood, propane, or paper may be burned. No Campfires, briquette/charcoal barbeques, or stove fires. No burning shall be undertaken unless weather conditions (particularly wind) are such that burning can be considered safe. During certain times of the year, when fire danger is high, residential hazard reduction by burning of dead vegetation is unsafe. Homeowners should always check with their local CAL FIRE station and local air quality management agency before burning. Even if your county is marked as "burning allowed" on the burn status page, you must still verify that it is a permissive burn day in your area by contacting your local air quality management agency. Fires are only to be burning from 6:00 am – 11:45 pm and there must be a person in attendance at all times the fire is burning. The fires can only be put out with water, absolutely not sand. The California Department of Fire & Forestry Protection/CAL FIRE/State Fire Marshal or its designated local agent, The Briarmont Fire Department: The Fire Commissioner, The Fire Chief, or its firefighters along with The Office of The Hartwell County Sheriff/Hartwell County Sheriff’s Department: The Sheriff, The Undersheriff, The Coroner, or it’s deputies can order these fires out at anytime and hold its enacting/enabling persons, residents, associations such as fraternities or sororities, or their leadership structure responsible for failure to put them out. Failure to do so can result in either fines, jail time, county parole/community service or a combination of all three. Escalation of charges to uncontrolled burning or arson may also result.
