Eliza Mae Ashton, née Hale, was a daughter of the founding Hale family — of Alan and Gertrude Hale — who married Henry Ashton and joined the Caleb branch of the Ashton line. Her marriage was the second time the Hale and Ashton bloodlines met, a generation after Rebecca Hale married Samuel; through Eliza Mae, Hale blood entered the working branch of the family as well as the Residence line. With Henry she raised their son Arther, who carried the branch into the twentieth century.
Born in 1844, Eliza Mae outlived her husband by eight years. Henry died in 1918; she remained in Briarmont as a widow through the early Oakridge years and died in 1926. Of the Hale-born women who married into the Ashtons, she is remembered as the one who long outlasted the timber era that had shaped her married life.
