Jonas Hale (1785–1837) headed the founding Hale homestead, one of the earliest settler households on the Briarmont coast. He and his wife Charlotte belonged to the town’s first, hardest years — when survival meant fishing the cove, cutting timber for one’s own use, keeping small gardens, and trading along the coast — a life that left little behind in the way of records.
What the homestead left was children. Through his son Alan the name carried into a second generation; through his daughter Rebecca, who married Samuel Ashton, the Hale line joined the Ashtons of the Residence — making Jonas a forefather of one of Briarmont’s most prominent houses. He is remembered less for anything he built than for the lines that ran on from his household after the Hale name itself had faded from the town’s rolls.
