Gertrude Hale (née Rudolph, 1814–1887) married Alan Hale of the founding homestead and became mother to the last Hale generation — her son Anderson and her daughters Eliza Mae and Catherine, who married into the Ashton and Sweely families. Gertrude outlived them all as Hales: by her death in 1887 the name had been gone from Briarmont’s rolls for fifteen years, surviving only as blood in other houses. Fittingly for her family, she is remembered chiefly through the women who left it.
