103 - Clinical Teaching Standards

103.1 TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES

Teaching at Hartwell General happens in the course of ordinary work. Opportunities include:

  • Ward rounds
  • Emergency Department cases
  • Clinical skills demonstrations
  • Simulation exercises
  • Case discussions
  • Diagnostic interpretation
  • Surgical and procedural observation
  • Mentored patient assessments

103.2 TEACHING AND THE PATIENT

Patients should never feel ignored or excluded during teaching. When teaching occurs, staff should explain procedures in a way that keeps the patient comfortable and involved.

103.3 STUDENTS AND INTERNS

Students and interns are expected to:

  • Be respectful and professional.
  • Work within their approved scope of practice.
  • Ask for assistance whenever uncertain.
  • Participate actively in ward rounds, teaching sessions, and simulations.
  • Accept feedback positively and strive for continual improvement.

The scope of practice for each grade, and the supervision each requires, is set out in the HGH Clinical Staff Manual.
